How to become a member:

We have members who range from beginners with small telescopes or binoculars to experts with state-of-the-art equipment. The club itself owns a large 28-inch Webster dobsonian reflector and we use it regularly at the largest publicly-accessible roll-off observatory in Ontario.

To become a member, you only need an interest in stargazing, we will provide the rest.  Our meetings are open to the public and you are more than welcome to join us for a few meetings on a trial basis with “no obligation to buy.”

A yearly membership is currently $40 and includes your immediate family as well. We encourage family participation.

Membership entitles you to attend our meetings, BAS club viewing events, use of a personal rental telescope for a month or two, and access to the ES Fox Observatory at various club events.

You also get 12 emailed issues of StarGazer News, our club newsletter. It’s pages are full of astronomy information, updates on club and public events, a monthly sky events calendar to keep you informed of sky happenings and a featured constellation for you to observe in detail. There is even a classified ads section on which you can advertise your equipment for sale.

To take out a membership, send a cheque for $40 made out to the “Bluewater Astronomical Society” with your name(s), full mailing address, email and phone number to:

BAS HISTORY

The Bluewater Astronomical Society (Incorporated Feb 2011) was formerly the Bruce County Astronomical Society. That group was started by some avid amateur astronomers in Port Elgin, ON in 1990. The main club telescope at that time was an 8-inch Meade SCT that was donated by Dr Herb Coleman, a Southampton ON resident. He also gave the school board the dome and auxiliary hardware that eventually was installed on a large trailer (image above) which served as an observatory for club members and students of the Bruce County School Board. We also held many astronomy events for the general public while that facility was in operation. That building eventually had to be deactivated but a new facility, the ES Fox Observatory has replaced it at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre near Oliphant ON.

Here is a recent centre page spread that appeared in Minor Hockey News that details our history: BAS pictorial
