VIEWING THE TRANSIT WITH A SOLAR FILTER

In this posed image, we have Robert W. looking at the transit through a 1000 Oaks filter. The backwards reflection is the ES Fox sign on the west wall of the observatory and  Photoshop was used to add an enlarged image of the Sun with Venus on it taken 8:38 pm DST. In fact there was a much smaller real solar image but the edge of Robert’s right hand is covering it here.

Eric I. shows a young astronomer the Transit of Venus across the Sun with a H-alpha Solar Scope.

Aaron T. took this image of the planet Venus at the moment of 2nd contact. Other images of the same event showed that the Black Drop effect which occurs at 2nd contact lasted for about 2 minutes. No wonder astronomers could not time it precisely!

During sunset, the silhouette of Venus was distorted by layers of denser air into separate images -sometimes even three dots were seen for a few seconds. Weird, or what? Image by John H.
